What is micromobility?

Micromobility is defined as small, lightweight vehicles that are personally driven.

Basics of Electric Micromobility

With rapid advancements, micromobility has become accessible to the majority of the population. The main advances that are driving this rapid advancement are:

Electric Bicycle and Scooter Statistics

According to market research company Mordor Intelligence, the Canadian e-bike market has continued to evolve as urban adoption, battery technology, and product choice expand.

Historical market snapshot: In Mordor Intelligence's earlier 2024–2029 market dataset, the Canada e-bike market was estimated at USD 33.76 million in 2024 and projected to reach USD 86.27 million by 2029, representing a forecast CAGR of 20.64%.

That earlier dataset also showed clear trends in consumer preferences and technology adoption. Pedal-assisted electric bicycles represented a 80.10% value share in 2023. Mordor Intelligence linked the segment's dominance in part to fewer regulatory barriers compared with other propulsion categories.

Urban electric bicycles led the market by application in the same dataset, with a 75.84% value share in 2023. The research associated growth in city and urban e-bike use with expanding cycling infrastructure and the growing role of bike-sharing and rental programs.

Battery technology was another major factor. Lithium-ion batteries held an 86.25% value share in 2023, reflecting their widespread use across modern electric bicycles.

The earlier report also projected the high-speed electric bicycle segment to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.96% from 2024 to 2029.

2026 Update: Canada's E-Bike Market Continues to Evolve

Mordor Intelligence's current 2026 edition uses updated market estimates and a new 2026–2031 forecast period. The latest report estimates Canada's e-bike market at USD 1.32 billion in 2026 and projects it to reach USD 2.39 billion by 2031, representing a forecast CAGR of 12.62%.

The latest segmentation also shows that pedal-assist e-bikes represented 65.27% of Canadian e-bike revenue in 2025, while city and urban models accounted for 43.51%. Lithium-ion batteries remained dominant with an 84.15% market share in 2025.

Cargo and utility e-bikes are another area to watch. Mordor Intelligence currently forecasts that segment to grow at a 13.41% CAGR through 2031, reflecting continued interest in electric bikes for urban logistics and practical transportation.

Canadian Bikeway Comfort and Safety Metrics

According to Statistics Canada's Canadian Bikeway Comfort and Safety metrics (Can-BICS) research, the quality and availability of cycling infrastructure varies considerably across Canada.

The study looks at the amount and quality of bike lanes within 1 km areas called “Dissemination Areas” (DAs).

In these areas, the total length of cycling paths ranges from 0 to 28.5 km, with the highest being in downtown Vancouver.

On average, across Canada, there are 1.7 km of cycling paths per square kilometer.

The highest density of cycling paths observed was 24.3 km per square kilometer.

About 34% of these areas had no cycling infrastructure at all. In cities, this number was lower at 13%.

Additionally, 40% of these areas did not have any bike paths that are considered medium or high in comfort and safety. This number was also lower in cities, at 19%.

In simple terms, while some places in Canada, like downtown Vancouver, have extensive cycling paths, many areas, especially outside major cities, still lack adequate and comfortable cycling infrastructure.

2026 Update: Toronto's Cycling Network Continues to Expand

While cycling infrastructure varies widely across Canada, major cities continue to expand their networks. According to the City of Toronto, Toronto had 346 km of on-street cycling infrastructure and 399.3 km of multi-use trails as of December 2025.

The City now reports these figures in centreline kilometres, which measure the length of each road or trail segment rather than counting infrastructure on both sides of a street separately.

For e-bike riders and other micromobility users, the continued development of connected cycling infrastructure can make short urban trips, commuting, and last-mile transportation more practical.
